In August 2012 Olive-Harvey College will begin offering a new
Environmental Biology Associate of Science Concentration. A brochure describing the new program may be downloaded
here.
Courses are rigorous and chosen to maximize transfer of students with ALL SCIENCE & MATH MAJORS (not just environmental sciences) to local 4-year colleges and universities. These especially include
UIC,
DePaul,
Loyola, &
IIT.
There are two new courses: Environmental Biology II (4 credit hours) and Environmental Microbiology (4 credit hours). Students may choose electives from Laboratory or Field Biology Tracks.
Internships with
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,
Forest Preserve District of Cook County,
Black Oaks Sustainability Center,
Volunteer Stewardship Network, and other local employers/stakeholders are part of the program. A research component is also incorporated.
The Olive-Harvey wetland provides an on-site ecological and environmental laboratory for students, as well as an educational and recreational resource for the community. Restoration of the wetland will also contribute to Service Learning.
